Opium poppies?

Do gardening stores carry seeds of opium poppies(papaver somniforum). Or just the regular poppies.

Regular department stores don't carry either, but SPECIFICALLY gardening stores might  carry both. The plants will usually be a few months old to a year, and take another year to flower. You should expect 2 years to see a flower starting it from seed, but I'm not sure if there are opium poppies. I've seen opium poppy seeds available on ebay.

I grow poppies in my yard and they get about 2 feet high. They flower usually during May/ early June.

It is illegal to sell the seeds of opium poppies in the United States of America, if that is where you are from. However, there are ways around this. Check smaller seed houses, which often will offer them, and I never had any problem mailordering the seed of Papaver Somniferum from the catalog of Thompson and Morgan.

If you still have trouble obtaining your plant, you might just try poppy seed from jars in the culinary herb section of the grocery store. Culinary seeds in jars usually sprout readily, and the poppy seed will often be Papaver Somniferum.

If THAT fails, try getting some dried poppy heads from the local craft store- there may be some spare seeds still floating around in the pods. Incidentally, the dried pods you buy at the craft store are just as potent as any your will grow. !0 pods ground in the blender, pour boiling water over and let steep for 10 minutes and voila! You got yourself a dang sick stomach and a high that lasts a good 12 hours.

By the way, "LAU1922" has absolutely no idea what s/he is talking about. You were asking about  Papaver Somniferum, not any other species of Papaver. Papavers vary in growth habits; Papaver Somniferum is strictly an annual, which means it germinates, grows, blooms, seeds, and dies all in the same season.
