Opponent Preview: San Diego Chargers face New Orleans Saints and Denver Broncos
The opponent preview continues with analysis of San Diego Chargers’ regular season games.  In this edition, we will preview games to be played in week 5 and 6.
Previously, we previewed week 1, 2, 3 and 4 games. Chargers season should be up and running by that time. Now they will have to face two fierce opponents.
If not hurt by injuries during the first four weeks, both the defensive and the offensive team would be sharp and more penetrating.
Week 5: New Orleans Saints
New Orleans Saints had a sparkling 2011 season. They finished their regular season 13-3, won their wildcard game, but failed to progress further in the playoffs after losing to San Francisco 49ers.
After the bounty scandal, things have drastically changed in Saints’ camp. They no longer have their top-notch head coach Sean Payton.
This could badly affect the offensive team’s output. Therefore, Chargers can pull the plug on the Saints defence.
Yet one cannot neglect the quality left on the Saints’ roster. Chargers’ offence will also be under constant pressure as they will face difficulty in penetrating Saints’ strong defensive line-up.
This game will be a tough contest for the Chargers. Last time these two teams played against each other was in October 2008. Saints won that game 37-32.
Head-to-Head
The two sides have faced each other 10 times. Chargers are up with seven wins and Saints have won three.
Week 6: Denver Broncos
Denver Broncos have all the limelight this offseason due to fitness concerns of their newly signed elite quarterback, Peyton Manning.
Manning is a game-changer. If he is fully fit while facing Charges, it could be a long day on the field for the Chargers’ defensive team.
Chargers’ offence will have to get more play time on the field to counter Manning.
Philip Rivers will have to perform at his best. On the other hand, his linebackers must not drop the ball.
Last time these two sides met each other was in the 2011 season. The game ended up with Broncos’ victory 16-13.
Both teams will confront each other two times this season. They will face each other again in game week 11.
Head-to-Head
They have played 104 games against each other. Broncos have won 55 matches while Chargers have won 48 matches. One match was tied.
