Opposition players calling for a hand pass to trick the one who's in possession???

I have noticed on many occasions where a player under pressure handpasses to the wrong team and am guessing that this could be a widespread practice out there in AFL land like they call "Over here John" when they aren't "John's" team mate at all. Do others thinks this is happening and is it a form of cheating?

  1. It's not a form of cheating, if a player is under pressure they are going to make mistakes like that! Good on the opposition for pressuring the player so much that he makes a mistake!

  2. I was goal umpiring a couple of years ago in the wet.

it was the last quarter, 10 points in it.

the player who was kicking the ball out after a behind (down my end) was called to play on. He ran out, under pressure..everyone calling for the ball, another guy from the other team calls his name, passes it to him and kicks a goal!!!

    sooooo funny!

no, its not cheating at all...its about thinking twice before passing, and having more awarness when you do have the ball.

as a field umpire most of the time, you would not believe how many times players try to pass the ball to me even though im wearing a bright orange shirt!

  3. Nah. Not cheating - all part of the game.

When I played it was going on regular. One of my favourites was to yell at an opposition player in front of me to "let it go" & in that split second many would actually pull out of the marking contest & I'd be able to mark the ball un-opposed. Good fun!

I had more success with that ruse than I did calling for a hand pass from an opposing player. Maybe because we were a lot slower in those days & the opponent wasn't under the pump as much as nowadays.

We would also yell 'play on' or 'touched ball' & every now & then some mug would fall for it.

  4. I played a couple of years of soccer. I knew one of the opposition, I called his name out to pass to me, he did and I scored a goal. He ran up to me and punched me and got sent off.

    I would do it again....

  5. Sorry but you are way off base here, it's happened since Adam was a boy, in all standards of the game, if there is a decent footballer in a side you quickly hear his name, if he's stupid enough not to look who is calling him then, tough titties.

Next you will be saying are they cheating when they are putting the opposition off when his having a shot at goal,  when are people going to learn that Aussie rules is a mans game, too many do gooders trying to turn our game into a fairies game, and by the way,  no one calls for the ball like "over here john"   over where?,  players have got umpteen bodies flying all the place, the calls are more precise as "front door"  "back door" "left"  "right"    never heard "over here" maybe at AUSKICK.

Yes it is happening, so what, it always has, and no it's not cheating. It's using your head, like getting inside an opponents head to put them off, i suppose you think running behind someone saying "you're gone, I'm gunna smash you" is cheating too, if they are cats and panic easy, get out of the game.

  6. Yes, you are so right. I have noticed the very same thing. It is not good sportsmanship at all - pretending to be a team mate - I can understand why they do it  - but I feel they should go in and get the hard ball themselves. I cannot understand the reasoning of people who do not agree that this  as it is unsportsman like and unethical. Come on  us  Australians are better people than this.

  7. Na. its a game and u need the ball to win. its just a way of getting the ball.

  8. Of course it's not cheating! The other players should realise this and remind the player before going out on the field to look for this. I think that it's the players fault if they don't look at what's happening. And obviously, you could look at the guy's uniform. It's not cheating. I just think whoever thought of that idea is really smart.

  9. i did that in my game last week n he kick 2 me wen no1 was ther but me, also players should no ther own team mates voices and b able 2 tell if it is a team mate or not
