Question:

Opticians! Is it normal to change from nearsighted to farsighted within a year?

So my whole life I've been slightly nearsighted with severe astigmatism. On my last check-up, I was told that I am now farsighted + astigmatic. I thought this was weird, but went ahead and got new lenses anyway.

The new glasses didn't seem quite right, but it was hard to tell - my astigmatism makes everything wonky. But recently I had a physical exam where they gave me a mini eye exam (with my new glasses on) and I failed miserably.

Does this mean that I clearly got a bad prescription, or is this kind of thing normal? It seems weird to have an optician get my prescription so wrong.

I called the optician, and they're going to charge me for a RX check, but said that if my prescription proved to be way off they'd waive the fee. Is this typical? And should they replace my lenses, too?

  1. It is possible for that to happen.

But if you aren't seeing well with them , somebody made a mistake.

How nice of them to waive the fees if it was their error...lol

Hopefully, if they made the error, they will replace your lenses at no charge to you.

If not...you will sure know where NOT to go next time.

  2. They should do a recheck as courtesy anyway, since you had the exam and are having a problem. Could be as simple as someone putting the wrong sign down on the Rx, + or -. It happens from time to time and if they are competent they will be able to determine that right away. If it is determined to be the case they should replace your lenses no charge with their apologies. Good luck.
