Which of the two would be more likely to yield better cleaning and lense comfort as well as long term benefits/problems? I had used Optifree for a long time but recently am trying the ClearCare.

  1. ClearCare uses hydrogen peroxide to clean and disinfect the lenses.  It's a very strong cleaner, hence the need to let it neutralize for 6 hrs otherwise you'll get a very nasty surprise when you put the hydrogen-peroxide-covered lenses in your eyes.  By-far the best disinfection system currently available.

Opti-free is a good multi-purpose solution as well, but think about it -- the solution has to be gentle (weak) enough not to burn your eyes. It can disinfect well, but it relies upon you following the instructions to a T.

Regardless of whichever solution you end up going with, make sure you RUB the lenses with solution before putting them away for the night.  I know the marketing for both say "no rub", but that's done merely for "consumer convenience" and you'll notice the full instructions make a brief mention of rubbing the lenses.   Rubbing the lenses won't hurt them or wear them out prematurely.  However, it WILL loosen up the dirt and proteins.   Ever try to wash a car by gently pouring soap and water on it only?  Doesn't work, does it?   The same's true about washing your hands or your lenses -- friction is the key to loosening up the dirt & debris.

Personally, I use both ClearCare and OptiFree.  ClearCare when I'm home and have 6 hrs to let it work (I even have a little countdown timer I set) and OptiFree for those times when I don't have 6 hrs to wait or when I'm only on the road for a few days.

There's also some evidence that these two solutions might be the best to use with the most types of lens material out there.   see http://www.staininggrid.com for the results.   "Corneal staining" are microscopic abrasions to the cornea.  Their impact on vision and long-term consequences are unknown, but I'd rather play it safe than sorry personally.
