With regard to preserving eyesight, is it better to have a brighter display so that the eyes can see the screen with less strain or is it better to keep the brightness setting lower to reduce contact of the light it emits that may affect the eyes? I am using a 17-inch screen laptop and I use the computer everyday anywhere between 2 and 8 hours per day.

Thank you in advance. =D

  1. Lower the light level until you start to lose contrast on the writing, and then come back up a notch, for the most restful setting.

I use a laptop, but I  plug in a wireless keyboard and mouse when I'm at home.  Better typing, better posture, better viewing distance.

  2. Keeping the brightness toned down is usually more restful for the eyes.

But the most important thing is to take frequent breaks to let your eyes refocus at distant objects. Even if it is just looking away from the screen every few minutes , to the far end of the room, for a few seconds.

Then 10 minutes of every hour, take a real break, and go look outside.

Laptops are worse than desktops because you can't back up from the screen as much , so you need more breaks.

The ideal distance to the screen is about 30 inches, but you can't do that with a laptop  of course.
