Question:

Optimal diets for swimmers?

I need advice on what foods I should eat and what supplements I should take to perform at a competitive college level. I'm a lifeguard but haven't swam regularly or seriously for about a year and a half. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Swimmers definitely encouraged to answer this. Thank You!

  1. your optimal diet would have no snacks, no soda, no ice cream, basically no refined sugars... only stuff like like whole wheat bread and certain types of pasta...and some fruit + vegetables to balance out vitamin needs....no salad dressings is a given.....no fried meat just boiled or grilled for protein..add some skim milk.. and thats pretty much it... eat 4 - 6 meals a day... get your sleep in and you should be good

  2. Balance is your friend, as usual. Your body will need some fats and oils in order to perform optimally and regularly repair cell damage. Remember moderation is key! High protein, lean meats like fish, beef and chicken. Lots of veggies and fruits. Plenty of whole grains. As for supplements, you won't need them unless you're using MORE nutrients than you are taking in. If you're doing endurance training or something of the like (along the lines of triathlon or open water swimming) look into soy and protein whey supplements you can make into shakes. Just remember that you're an athlete and you should eat like one - frequently and healthy. Avoiding snacks and soda is not necessarily the point, moderation IS. If you want a 100 calorie pack of Cheetos, have one, you work hard and can handle it! ; )

    Good luck!
