I have optimum. We have box in my brothers room and basic cable up stairs in the bedrooms there. We also have direct in the living room. But for whatever reason last week a few of our channels on basic cable went out saying a cable box is now required for those channels.

TLC, SciFi, E, Animal Planet, Travel Channel, TruTv are just a few of them that are out Why???

  1. Do you still have the old analog cable boxes?  If so, that could be the reason--ALL cable will be transmitted via digital soon and unfortunately, Cablevision still has customers out there that are on analog boxes.  You should call up Cablevision and let them know...you'll have to actually convert over to the digital box, which offers more channels and more options and better pictures--this new digital box should have a little card that you insert in a slot.

  2. Cablevision has changed a number of their analog, unscrambled channels to scrambled digital.

They announced this a few weeks ago. So, now you need a digital cable box to see these channels. Many cable companies are changing over to digital to save bandwidth. But Cablevision not only changed over, they scrambled them! So, even if you have an HDTV with a QAM tuner, you still need a cable box, because they are now scrambled.

Of course, there was no accompanying decrease in rates, or even an explanation. As usual, Cablevision does whatever they want to, relative to services, because they can! This is why a high percentage of their customers literally hate Cablevision.

  3. I called my local office about this and they told me that those signals are now only being picked up in digital.  Next year you won't be able to get anything without a digital cable box.  However, I was told that they are doing a promotion of only one (1) digital cable box free for 1 year plus io navigator.  Stop by your walk-in center and check it out.

  4. Just be glad that they didn't put them all on digital. That's what Mediacom is going to do to me. I already have a digital box but now I won't be able to watch something different while I Tivo something on digital cable.
