Option on Edgar Renteria denied by San Francisco Giants
The San Francisco Giants have denied an option on Edgar Renteria, valued at around $10.5 million. The power house hitter, who made the worthy contribution in the World Series to put his team up on the top, was slated to retire after the tournament, but it seems the man is hanging on to the game. The news comes from the San Francisco Chronicle and, in all likelihood, is considered authentic.
Edgar Renteria was not in good form during the regular season and it was not a good record to back his salary up. He featured in just 72 games and in 243 at-bats, his contribution came up with just 67 hits. That drove up his batting average to .276, but the strong slugger was still a missing power force during the regular season. His shortstop position did not get him the kind of performance he had wanted. The Giants were not lucky to have him during the season and it was not necessary to read that between the lines.
Regardless of what had transpired during the regular league tenure, Edgar was eventually back in the spotlight for the World Series clinching side, when the post season began in October. He was astonishing against the top crop ball clubs that went up against the club in the post season. The $10 million annual salary got its worth during the playoffs, as Renteria amassed 7 runs off 9 hits in 10 games. He also hit two amazing home runs against the Texas Rangers in the World Series. He was the orchestrator for San Francisco Giants’ bid for the ultimate trophy in Major League Baseball. He drove in 6 runs while batting in the tournament.
It was not a surprise to see the big man claim the Most Valuable Player award for the World Series. His time on the plate caused enormous problems for Cliff Lee, C.J. Wilson, and the entire Texas Rangers’ Bullpen. His contribution was enough to get his side to the ultimate victory and his lone home run in Game 5 proved that. At the end, it became a question of what Edgar meant to San Francisco when his option came on for discussion.
