  1. need it by sept 20, or your visa expirs..

  2. i know someone who got their opt in june 2006, but didn't started looking for a job until january 2007. her opt expired later that year, in june '07 but she's on h1b right now...she applied the h1b on april 1st, 2007, got it, and started working in oct 07....the period between the opt expiring in june '07 and working with the h1b  in october, 1, 2007, you would be out of status...her lawyer said she needed to find a method to stay legally for that 3 months period or apply for the h1b outside of the country... one method was to find a school that would give her an I-20 so that she can study for three months...she actually went back to school at the junior college...(she spoke with an international student advisor to see if she was legible to get another I-20 at the j.c. (she already had a masters degree at that time).  The school gave it to her, and she studied from june to end of september before starting to work...

i don't know if there's a law like what you're talking about, but once your opt is expired, you are out of status.  good luck!
