Or Ram-Harel rallies past Mitchell Krueger into the second round of Boys’ Singles – US Open 2012
Israel’s Or Ram-Harel made the biggest upset of the Boys’ Singles event so far by toppling fifth seed, Mitchell Krueger of USA, in three sets 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 in the first round at the US Open on Monday. The Israeli contender took
two hours and 33 minutes to undo his higher ranked opponent in a tough contest.
Ram-Harel made his intentions clear from the start of the encounter, breaking the home favourite in the opening game to go up 1-0. Krueger hit back in the second to level the proceedings at 1-1. Ram-Harel nailed breaks of serve
again in the fifth and seventh game to attain a 5-2 lead. Krueger tried his best to come on equal terms by winning the subsequent two and reducing the trail to 4-5 but he lost the 10th game to go down 4-6.
The Israeli participant banged in a couple of aces and made three double faults in the first set. He kept his first serve percentage on 56 and secured 12 of the 19 points on them.
Krueger made amendments in his game after surprisingly losing the first set. They worked for him, as he clinched opening three games of the second one, racing to a 3-0 lead. Ram-Harel cut some trail by winning two in a row but
Krueger struck again and consolidated on it to stretch his advantage to 5-2. The Israeli player was so determined that he bounced back once again to equalise the score at 5-5. Though, he could not hold his serve in the 12th and lost the second set
5-7.
The American contestant came on equal terms but he did not have impressive statistics, as he hit only one ace and committed three double faults. He gave exactly same performance on winners and unforced errors.
In the decider, Krueger and Ram-Harel made a steady start, as they held their serve in the first four games to square off the score at 2-2. The Israeli player clinched four of the next five and sealed it 6-3.
Ram-Harel is slated to take on South Africa’s Wayne Montgomery in the second round.
