  1. Just go to Oracle's Website and download the free database there. 9i and 10g are better to start from. I would suggest you to start from 9i so that you can appreciate the importance and applications of later versions as to why they are important.

Go for SQL, then PL/SQL and lastly Forms if you are following a developer track.

  2. 9i has reached the end of premium support (in other words, companies are paying extra for support).  I certainly wouldn't start there.  11g has been out for a year and a half now with r2 coming soon.  If anyone is still on 9 their likely to be entrenched applications that won't see major revisions without an upgrade anyway.

I was at an Oracle seminar yesterday and they were recommending companies still on 9 skip 10 and go right to 11 at this point (premium support on 10 will end in a year and a half).  One of the big problems with Oracle is that people learn how to do something in one version and keep doing it that way, even after a better option becomes available.  I would learn 11g first.  Worst case is you have to go through the new features guide for 10 or 9 and determine which things don't exist in the earlier versions.  Then when it's time to upgrade, you can amaze your co-workers with the knowledge of all the amazing new features (and there are many in 11g).

If you really don't want to learn 11, start at 10.

  3. Start with oracle 10g Express Edition . Its free.

See oracle site and do a small registration to download the software.

Available for both windows and linux.

    Best of luck .
