The Oracle Racing team from America secured their place as the winners at the America’s Cup World Series (ACWS) San Diego round on Sunday, November 20, 2011. The third phase of the Cup scheduled held in San Diego.
The last day of the event saw James Spithill, the captain of the Oracle Racing, take a decisive lead as his catamaran sailed with swiftness towards the finish line to clinch a win in the third round of the sailing event. Expertly
working the strongest wind of week, Spithill drove the 45-foot Oracle catamaran to victory in the event-closing, fleet race Sunday to give the reigning America’s Cup champions a sweep of both the match racing and fleet racing titles in the third round of the
America’s Cup World Series.
Spithill was filled with energy as he saw the finish line draw closer. He expertly steered his forty-five foot Oracle catamaran to the end of the race on Sunday, November 20, 2011 in San Diego. Spithill, who has made San Diego
his home away from home because for his love for yachting, was excited to win the third part of ACWS. After the win he said, “We wanted to be the first team to win both halves of one of these regattas”
The Australian yachtsman, Spithill, who resides in America became the first ever captain to create a unique record. In the inaugural season of the (ACWS), he became the first captain who won the fleet racing championship and claimed
the match-racing event under his belt. Larry Ellison, the 67-year old CEO of the Oracle Corporation, who is also the team principal of Oracle Racing, was among Spithill in his catamaran. It was indeed an honor for Spithill and his team that one of the richest
men in the world was among his team as he won the San Diego phase on Sunday.
Spithill, who made his debut at the 2000 America’s Cup, secured the third spot at the Match Race World Championship in 2003. His sailing tactics and skills have given him a prominent place in the world of yachting. Spithill won
the match-racing event on Saturday and then won the fleet-racing event on Sunday. The Emirates Team New Zealand was closing in to Oracle Team, but Spithill was right on the spot with his steering abilities. He was able to finish the final leg with a margin
of forty-five second over Team New Zealand.
