When Orestes was pursued by the Furies (Eumenides) for killing his mother (to avenge his father), he sought sanctuary at the Delphic Oracle, where he was advised to present his case to the newly-formed law court in Athens.  Aeschylus' play The Eumenides opens with Orestes clinging to the altar in the shrine in Delphi, with the Furies sleeping in a heap around him.
