Question:

Oral Surgery--Laughing Gas?

by  |  earlier

I'm having three impacted teeth removed (2 bottom wisdom teeth and one molar) in a couple weeks and the surgeon does not offer general anesthetia. I have the option to get laughing gas (nitrous oxide), but insurance will not cover it. I'm scared and I don't want to remember the surgery! Will the laughing gas make me forget or just take away my anxiety? Should I get it even though insurance won't pay for it?

  1. You just want to relax.. that is what it will do.

Your dentist should be able to set up payments for you to

pay for it if the insurance does not.

I had 4 wisdom teeth removed and personally I think it was over kill .. an IV and the gas.. I had them put the gas down to near 0 cause they wanted me to be awake.  Someone has to drive you home and your out of it for a day. But the next day your feeling better and 48 hours later your back to normal.

I just had them take off a cap without an anaesthesia I hate the numb feeling.. and it only twinges a couple of times and your done.

  2. Yes, I'd either recommend finding a different oral surgeon or if that isn't an option, go with the gas. The gas will pretty much knock you out, so you don't really remember anything. When I was around 10 years old, I had 7 baby teeth removed because they wouldn't come out of the gum while the adult was trying to come in; I was terrified, but I had the gas, and it made things sooo much better. I'm surprised that your surgeon doesn't have anesthesia for the wisdom teeth though...

  3. When I got mine out they put me out. Most surgeons do, maybe you should try to go to a different one. Laughing gas may make you sleep, although I've had it and it helps but no where near putting you out.

  4. go to another dentist...

  5. I had laughing gas when I two teeth removed. You won't know what's going on and you won't feel anything. It's a good option.
