I took this picture a couple summers ago here in the Chicago suburbs. It was sitting on the curb in my parking lot.I've never seen one like it before or since so I was just wondering if it was a normal species or some type of albino/gene mutation on the color.

  1. Not 100% but it appears to a a Carolina grasshopper. Not an old one but in nymphal stage. These grasshoppers vary in color and can be close to the color of the soil they developed on. They can be redish.

Edit: Note color spots on femur. Shape of caripace on thorax. Note faint marks on front legs matching Carolina grasshopper. A wide spread grasshopper indemic to your state.

  2. lubber grasshopper

  3. Grasshoppers tend to change color as they get older, or to suit their surroundings.  I live in the country, and the insect you have in the photo is just one of many color variations I've seen on grasshoppers.  Typically, the younger one is, the greener it is and they turn a brown or rust color as they age.
