I read in a magazine that drinking a glass of orange juice a day could cause diabetes? Is there any truth to this?

  1. One of the reasons given for the increased risk of diabetes in women drinking orange juice is the absence of fibre and is hence absorbed very quickly by the stomach while eating the orange fruit contains fibre which slows down its absorption. Packaged orange juices also have a high amount of sugar in them which increases blood sugar in the body.

However the study also found eating oranges could reduce the risk of diabetes by 18%. This indicates the natural sugars added in the juice may be the culprit in increasing the risk of diabetes.

So the answer is...processed orange juice would increase the risk. If you made it yourself with real oranges and just their juice you'd be fine.

  2. Nutritional Healing by James F. Balch, MD. page 230 - Diabetes subheading Recommendations reads:

"Eat a high-complex-carbohydrate, low-fat, high-fiber diet including plenty of raw fruits and vegetables as well as fresh vegetable juices."  Of the long list of don't that is listed NONE said to avoid orange juices.

Back To Eden page 322 under the Heading Diabetes; subheading Diet

"Use all kinds of fresh fruits that are ripened in the sun, such as strawberries, ORANGE, apricots, currants, blueberries, peaches, pears, pineapples, apples, lemons, red raspberries, huckleberries, grapefruit, cherries, and limes."

"Fruits should never be sweetened with sugar.  Cane sugar, raw or natural brown sugar, and all sugar syrups are harmful.  The natural sugar contained in grapes and other fruits is beneficial."

"Eat as many fruits and vegetables as possible."

So there you have it. It is safe to have your orange juice.  Fruit sugar assimilates slower than processed sugar and so it is very safe.  I know some of these oranges can be very sweet.  If your juice is too sweet for your taste, then you can always dilute it with water.
