How much food value, calories, etc. do orangfe peels have? Years ago, when I was in high school, I recall an article in Sucessful Farming magazine that discussed a farmer's feeding his cows, I think they were dairy cows, orange peelings, but I don't recall if that was their primary source of nourishment.

  1. i started getting addicted to mandarin peels a year ago after i first tried it. Orange peels should probably taste the same cept stronger. Theyre probably packed with vitamin C.

  2. Probably fiber and cheapness (moneywise).

  3. Well, the amount of nutrition an item has is very dependant on the animal who is doing the eating.  Cows can derived much more nutrition from eating orange peels due to their ability to break down cellulose fibers, than either humans or carnivores.  In general, Ungulates and other herbivores have evolved to break down cellulose fibers and obtaining nutrition from food that are considered non-digestable by omnivores and carnivores.

Orange peel has as much vitamin C as the orange.  I doubt it was a primary form of nutrition, because it would not provide enough cellulose for their guts to break down and would probably give them a good case of the runs if they got too much.
