Question:

Orange Roughy question?

I love orange roughy fish.

However, I read that they are deep ocean fish that can live up to 150 years!!

If we keep fishing these long lived fish, would we not eventally make them go extinct?

Or do they reproduce rapdly?

Do scientists know much about their life cycle?

  1. I have read that what you suspect is true.  I too like to eat the fish but I have stopped doing so.  Apparently they do not reproduce rapidly enough to replace the amount that are being taken.  Perhaps steps have now been taken to make sure they are not being over fished but I do not trust commercial interests.  They will want to make money until the last fish is caught.

  2. They reproduce very slowly and killing them off in  large numbers is not a great idea....
