Order of maternal and paternal Last names in the US?

In the US what is the typical way a persons name is given

Lets say some ones

first name: John

Mothers last name: Gates

Fathers Last name: Smith

Would his name be

-John Gates Smith

or

-John Smith Gates

Would one of the names be considered a middle name or is it possible to have 2 last names

  1. His mother's maiden name could be used as a middle name.

    Usually the father's name is the surname.


  2. there is not really legislation that states the correct order, whaen the birth is registered the parents will decide how thay want to put it on the certificate. eg, say they wanted to make his middle name Bill, so... JOHN Bill smith-gates

                                                  JOHN Bill gates

                                                  JOHN Bill smith

    it is entirely up to the parents, the child can have either surname or bth if they wish in any particular order.
