Question:

Ordering advance train tickets in the UK?

Do you have to buy advance tickets at the station you will be leaving from (this is what I normally do)? I want to go from Hinckley to York in June, but I won't be in Hinckley until June, so I wouldn't be able to get advance tickets then. I'm currently at uni in Portsmouth so would I be able to buy my Hinckley-York tickets from a Portsmouth station?

  1. Ask a friend to buy them for you online and pay them back :)

As far as I understand you can buy the tickets from any station providing that the ones you want aren't TOC-specific.

  2. You can buy any ticket from any station, either for today, or in advance. The only ones you can't always buy are TOC-specific fares.

I regularly buy tickets in advance from the station closest to where I work, when the travel itself commences from the station closest to home.

Don't forget your railcard, both when you buy your tickets at P'mouth, and when you travel.
