Question:

Ordering wine and Splitting the bill?

How should I handle it when we eat out with friends and they order an expensive bottle of wine for the table, without asking, and then expect to split the bill? I like to have wine with dinner, and I don't want to ruin their night, but house wine is fine with me!

  1. Tell them you're going to take it easy that night and head for the softer stuff, (aka - cheaper stuff).

    OR

Just tell them the truth, "I can't keep affordin all this expensive wine with my crappy job" or something, lol .. I know how you feel, my friends do the same ALL THE TIME.. but with appetizers and such.

  2. Don't drink the wine they ordered, just order yourself a glass of house wine seperately. I should think they would get the point.

Or maybe when you make the arrangement to go out together, tell them straight out you would prefer the less expensive wine, as you are watching your budget.

  3. Just say, "Yo, dude, take it easy on me tonight."

  4. They are conspiring against you. The wine wasn't really that expensive. The waiter and whoever that was were s******g you. Here is the vaseline sorry it't too late.

  5. "New friends coming up"!

  6. Just start off when ordering by saying "I want to put this on my credit card, so can you put it on a separate check."  Then if they order a bottle and share, it's on them, if they order a bottle and share, you can always buy another bottle to share back.

You can also take the approach of "lets try two different wines tonight and each pick on that fits your price range."

  7. Most restaurants serve wine by the glass. Order your own glass of wine and don't partake of their expensive bottle. When the bill comes, simply pay for your own glass which should be independently listed on the bill. Anticipate their suggestion that "we should split the bill" by asking "what is my portion?" They should get the hint.

  8. bring some wine

  9. you just have to sound off and just let them know you'll be buying your own wine by the glass.

  10. maybe you should order the wine next time.. or dont drink it and order your own bottle

  11. If THEY order the wine to share, they should pay for it , plain and simple. If YOU order an appitizer to share, you should pay for it. Get my drift?

  12. Well, it,s alright, because they are your friends. But later on, you can tell them your reservations.
