  1. Just throwing this out there for future green reference..... there are also reusable cloth pads and the Diva Cup (check out divacup.com).

  2. I don't know if my tampons are organic or not.  I use a brand that doesn't have a cardboard tube at all.  (OB)

The "flushable" tubes will unfurl in water, and eventually break down.

Edit - I've heard  others say they didn't find the OB "comfortable."  I've never noticed a problem, so it must be a very personal thing.

Also, I realize I'm old, but I absolutely had to laugh when I saw the references to the "reusable cloth pads."  When I was very young, we had rags for exactly that purpose when we were out of the more convenient modern pads.  Though most of history, that is what women used.  If you know who Lizzy Borden was (in the old rhyme, she gave her mother forty whacks...) you might be interested to learn that her alibi for the horrendous crime for which she was accused what that she was in the basement washing her monthly preparations, and heard nothing at all of the murders.  In those days, of course, there were not automatic clothes washers.

What a relief it was to women to have disposable pads!

It seems we are coming full circle.

  3. Since no ladies seem to want to respond perhaps you'll excuse me if I do? You should check the link below, my daughter found it useful. Scroll down to "From Red to Green".

  4. Not only are there organic cotton tampons (Natures gate, etc), but things like Luna pads and glad rags, which are reusable pads--which is what I use.  There are also, if you're used to using tampons, things like the Diva cup, lady cup, lunette or Mooncup/Keeper (see link below)--which are tiny cups you insert to catch everything and you just empty and rinse (if in public, just empty, but rinse when you get home).  I used a keeper for a while, but lost it in my move from my apartment (oops!).

All in all--just because something gets soft enough to go down a toilet, does not mean it's biodegradable, and again, even if something does degrade to a non-visible point, what kinds of chemicals are they using to bleach the tampon/cardboard that are not only leaching into the soil/water supply, but into your body?  If nothing else, find a natural ORGANIC tampon, not just a biodegradable one.  A google search for organic tampons, organic menstrual products, reusable pads, menstrual cups, etc will help you out!  Good luck.

  5. Try http://organiccottonplus.com/ for organic cotton tampons by Seventh Generation. They sell non-applicator tampons so you don't have to worry about the cardboard. They also sell organic cotton pads. The Trader Joes near me also sells Seventh Generation personal care products. It isn't as enviro-friendly as cloth pads and Diva-cups, but they are more ..well...convenient.

  6. Tampax are evil and suport testing on animals. there are tones of organic, biodegradable tampons and pads. the best ones ive found are Eco Yarn Co's Organic cotton tampons. you can get them on the Greenpeace site and theyre brill. bit bigger than other regular ones so unless ur really really heavy just get regular.

a lot of companies bleech the cotton which is really bad for the environment and ur health.

my friend uses Natracare tampons and shes never had any problems with them.

its much better to use non-aplicator tampons as there is less waste

    Hope this helps :P

  7. The "greenest" option are the Diva Cup http://www.divacup.com or buy reusable pads which you can find on www.etsy.com
