How would the breakdown of large amounts of organic matter upset the natural balance of lake ecosystem?

  1. When organic matter breaks down, it uses up oxygen, so there's less dissolved oxygen in the water for other organisms.

    The decomposition of organic matter also releases nitrogen (from the proteins making up the organism).  The form the nitrogen takes is usually ammonia, which is toxic to fish in relatively small amounts.
