If I buy an organic product can I just assume that it isn't tested on animals? I'm thinking that's not always the case and I just want to be sure! Thanks =)

  1. No. Companies that use organic ingredients may be more likely to use humane testing methods, but "organic" doesn't automatically mean "cruelty-free."

Here is a really easy way to find which companies do and don't test on animals: http://search.caringconsumer.com/

(On the second drop-down menu, choose the product type and press "go." You'll get a list of cruelty-free companies that sell that type of product.)

Thanks for being a compassionate shopper! :)

  2. Eh? Organic means only natural products were used in the production. Animals are "natural products" so you'd be wrong to assume.

  3. Organic means that the product (meat product or plant product) was not treated with antibiotics or chemicals.

For plant products, the soils were fertilized with other natural products like grass or other clippings to fertilize the soils.  Chemical pesticides were not used.....otherwise, the product was grown in an environment where all the resources are renewed much like in nature.

For animal products, the animal was fed natural foods...for beef, they are all grass fed which instead of having animal products in the feed.  No antibiotics were used.  The animal was not brought up in a factory but instead was free range which means they are allowed to roam the land on which they are raised.

There is no "animal testing" in organic.  It just means that all products are produced in a way that is sustainable.

    Any questions, please email

  4. Very few products (lotion, shampoo etc...) are truly organic.

A marketing ploy by the big corporations (who would be more likely to animal test) is to use the word organic in their product when they are anything but.

If your chosen products has a long list of scientific names that you can't pronounce, be very wary.

A proper certified organic product should be free from animal testing but its always best to read the labels first.

Alternatively, why don't you make products at home, at least then you know what is in them. Or only use products you can also eat.

    (i.e.)

A good hair rinse after shampooing is organic apple cider vinegar and warm water (no need for conditioner)

A good moisturizer is 100% organic pure virgin coconut oil

Other good moisturizer is 100% organic avocado oil.

All of these items you can also consume.

  5. Its a toughie... I read that a lot of the "USDA Organic" products aren't as organic as we think. The gov't allows them more leeway in production than the smaller organic certifiers do. I came across the study in Skinny B*tch, and they cited the source, but i don't have it right int front of me. I'll update if I can find the passage.

I would look for a disclaimer on the product that says " not tested on animals" and if you are not convinced, try researching the compant online to see how animal friendly they are.
