Organisers of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix doubtful about circuit changes – Formula 1 news
Recent reports have revealed that the organisers of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix are going to think twice before changing the layout of the Yas Marina Bay in order to increase the rate of overtaking during the race as requested by the International Automobile
Federation (FIA).
The season finale of the 2010 Formula 1 season was quite disappointing as the fans were expecting some overtaking and entertainment but instead, it was quite boring and streamlined with a low amount of overtaking.
The 2010 Formula 1 championship hung in the balance until the very last race of the season as the top four drivers actively competed for the championship until the end of the season.
Nevertheless, the FIA believes that the amount of overtaking should increase in the sport as result of which Formula 1 would become more entertaining. Therefore, they reintroduced devices like the Kinetic Energy Recovery System and Drag Reduction System
along with some major changes to the new Pirelli tyres.
“Definitely, the new regulations have made formula one more exciting, but we will be watching the next couple of races keenly to see how they unfold before making a decision. We are looking at the circuit changes and will make a final decision in consultation
with FIA and the various stakeholders at the end of this month,” track boss Richard Cregan told the media.
He added that the main question the organisers are asking right now is that whether spending money on changing the layout of the track in order to improve the overtaking rate is necessary or not.
“Digging up the track even for minor changes is very expensive, so we need to make sure it is the right step forward and also the right time to close the circuit,” he said.
Altering the track would result in a loss of revenue as well and since the sport is not in the best of financial conditions at the moment, making these changes all of a sudden might affect the track’s original feel as well.
