Organisers of the Heritage tournament deny deal with Royal Bank of Canada – Golf news
Organisers of the Heritage tournament denied signing a deal with the Royal Bank of Canada in a press briefing on Monday.
According to a report in the Golf World, the tournament was close to finalising a deal with the Royal Bank of Canada and as per the deal, the bank will sponsor the tournament for the next four years.
Tournament director Steve Wilmot spoke on the issue and said, “It's not true.”
He clearly denied that any such deal had taken place in the past few weeks. He stated that the news regarding the deal signing was faux and no one should believe it. He also stated that he had been reached by several players and their caddies, who congratulated
him on getting the sponsorship courtesy to the rumour.
Wilmot requested the press not to spread such news, as it would create confusion for the prospect sponsors, which included the Royal Bank of Canada as well. Wilmot added that the RBC was one of the parties still in negotiation, but nothing concrete could
be disclosed.
He said, “It's hurting us because we're engaged with so many companies. We are not in negotiations with any of them. There won't be an announcement in the near future.”
Similar response was given by the officials of the Royal Bank of Canada. The Bank made its stance clear on Twitter and said, “We are looking at things all the time, nothing concrete to report from this past week.”
The Heritage tournament is a 43-year-old event on the Professional Golfers Association Tour, which has been without a sponsor ever since Verizon Business called off a 24-year deal with the event. Ever since, the tour officials have been searching for a sponsor,
but they could not relish success and had to put up the tournament without a major sponsor.
Since the tournament did not have a major sponsor, the Tour and the County had to sponsor the winner’s prize money themselves. Let’s see if the Heritage manages to sign a deal with a major sponsor in near future.
