Question:

Organization or agency to advise me on difficulties with AARP and Hartford Auto Insurance?

As a senior I'm having difficulty with Hartford Auto Insurance. Long waits, complicated answers about the inflated amount I owe them when cancelling my policy. AARP who sponsors the insurance tells me they have no influence or control over them. When I ask AARP for complaint department or legal department (which they advise me they have) I meet with long holds and no assistance. I'm concerned over the lack of honoring the integrity of the individual and irresponsiblity to the needs of the older person, specifically me.

  1. You are calling the wrong company--AARP doesn't control the Hartford. Insurance is regulated by the state where you live. Call your state insurance department if you have any issues with the insurer's explanation. You can file a complaint against the insurer. The best thing to do is write a letter to the Hartford, and demand an explanation, in writing. When you cancel a policy early, they must return your unearned premium. There are some policies where the company keeps the "short rate"--you get back 90%, they keep 10%. The company is obliged to give you an explanation, in writing. Hope this helps.  AARP -endorsed products are not necessarily the best you can buy --and here is still another example of why-there is no one to talk to when you need help. It is always best to purchase insurance through an insurance broker, not a bank or special interest group.

  2. Right, AARP has no influence.  If you bought the insurance DIRECTLY from Hartford, you have no agent.  Hartford sells directly, but they ALSO sell through agents.  If you bought through an agent, go to your agent for help.  Otherwise, you ARE your agent.

    I've had good results here...

    Good Luck.

  3. Honestly the "needs of the older person" is often to stop driving completely.
