Organizers at AT&T National offer attractive discounts to lure Phillies and Boston Red Sox fans
Notoriously famous for its decades old love for the national baseball league and home grown kids, the Phillies, Philadelphia hosts this week’s AT&T National at the Aronimink Golf Club, and is likely to face a dearth of audience on the course.
The Phillies will be facing the Boston Red Sox on Thursday which will also be the opening day of the $6.2-million event on the PGA Tour and the organizers at the PGA have come up with attractive discounts to lure the Phillies fanatics to the course.
On Thursday, anybody wearing a Phillies T-shirt or a Phillies cap will be eligible for a $10 discount on their gallery passes. Those who will be in possession of a Phillies Versus Red Sox passes will be eligible for a “Buy one Get one” free on Thursday’s
tickets, which will also be the last day of the Phillies - Red Sox smack down. The organizers, therefore, are hoping that the turn out on the course will be better in the proceeding days.
Furthermore, the main entrance will be completely transformed into a “Phillies tailgate party” which will boost of spectacular baseball-themed menu including, hot dogs, peanuts and beer. There will also be an arrangement of a huge Jumbotron screen which
will telecast the Phillies - Red Sox game live to the audience at the course.
Aronimink hosted the AT&T National in 2010 for the first time and this would be the last edition of the tournament which will be hosted here in Philadelphia. The US Open is scheduled to move to Merion in two years time and Congressional Country Club will
take back the AT&T National which has been hosting the venue before.
Notwithstanding the poor course preparations at Congressional this year for the 111th US Open last week, the United States Golf Association (USGA) has not withdrawn its decision to scale back next year’s championship.
AT&T National has been associated to Tiger Woods in more than one way. Woods has been hosting the event on PGA Tour and is the main beneficiary of the earnings from the event which directly goes to the Tiger Woods Foundation.
Woods, although, will not be part of the field in the event but will be present as the official host of the event. He is currently battering a lingering left-knee injury and an Achilles strain and has not been playing after his first round withdrawal from
the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass.
Some 156 strong PGA players will be competing in the event which also includes a number of major winners. The winner’s prize share includes a staggering $1,116,000 and precious FedEx Cup points.
Philadelphia is known to be a predominantly baseball town where the masses have strong drinking tendencies and are accustomed of creating huge uproars during sports events, something which is alien to golf.
It will be interesting to see how PGA officials will end up in their efforts to lure public to a relatively quiet game of golf.
