Organizers unveil two-week Super Bowl traffic plan for Indianapolis downtown – NFL News
The city of Indianapolis has started preparing itself to successfully host the next Super Bowl event in February next year (2012) and as first of the expected measures by the local administration it has announced two-week traffic
plan to cater to the extra vehicular traffic presence on its roads and streets through out the period.
"We want to make sure everybody enjoys the event, it's a safe event," said Deputy Police Chief Mike Bates while commenting on the announcement of a traffic plan by the Super Bowl Host Committee.
The Committee said that next year’s Super Bowl would be different from all past events as it is for the first time that the Super Bowl game and all related events would be organized downtown. They would not be scattered all over
the city as used to be in the past.
Indianapolis expects the number of visitors and fans attending the events and game from 100,000 to 150,000, and the city administration said it would be well prepared to cater to the needs of all.
Mike Bates said that it was for the first time in history that an event (Super Bowl) of this magnitude would be hosted by the Indianapolis and it must be ready to meet the challenge successfully.
"Everybody seems to think that it's just a game, what's the big deal? It's more than just a game, it's a 10-day event," he said, adding that 80 to100 additional police officers would be deployed to direct traffic on key streets.
The organizing committee member Lori Miser said that certain streets would be closed down permanently or restricted commencing January 19 leading through to the day of the game. Additional arrangements would be made in the vicinity
of the Lucas Oil Stadium where the game would be held, she said.
The committee member further said that National Football League (NFL) has made arrangement with local parking garages for provision of parking lots to visitors and fans as charged parking in the weeks leading upto the event.
She added that so far two alternate routes were being recommended by the local administration to facilitate flow of the traffic by bypassing the downtown area.
