Question:

Organizing a sewing station?

So, I have a desk and it's only like two feet long and maybe a foot wide. I have two shelves above that. Currently the only thing I have on the top shelf is a mini tree that is real, some stationary in a really pretty wire box and my stapler and tape. On the bottom shelf the only things that I have are all of my different threads spread out in order of color and a can of pens and pencils and a bucket of office stuff. My sewing machine and my laptop both share the desk and when I use one I just put the other on my bed. My room is small but I want some way of organizing my stuff so I can somehow have a sewing station and a computer station. Like I said my room is small but I'm willing to try to make stuff. I'm not able to buy anything, but I have lots of craft stuff. Please help and give me a sense of organization. Thanks! =)

  1. I like using fishing tackle boxes or nice tool boxes to hold my sewing odds and ends.

My sewing room is horribly unorganized, so I'm afraid I won't be much help. :P If you search on flickr for "sewing room" there are a bunch of cute ones that might have ideas.

  2. try using unused space or adding shelves rather than any type of furniture that would take up floor space. A hangnig basket can be one option .

So you can get a shoe organzer with clear plastic holders and tack it onto the wall (or over a door if nearby and convenient)using large push pinsor nails or strong hooks. In those little pockets you can place scissrs etc and be able to see them and acess them w/o opening up drawers or tackle boxes For less used items yu can put underbed boxes and use some form of closing boxes for items like zippers and buttons. Use an ironing board you can fold up and put away when not using (large regular one is best) for ironing and cutting small to medium pattern pieces. For large pieces you may need to access a dining table, kitchen island table or use a floor for one time. Try hanging up fabric you may use soon on hangers and place on wall with a hook or large jumbo push pin. Also ziplock bags for patterns and pieces of patterns is helpful, tack up on wall with push pin if desired. Keepas many things up off floor as possible. Use magnet for pins, if they spill out you can put the magnet and ssweep them up more easily with it. Have a good light nearby. keep wound bobbins full of thread so when you are ready to sew you have less "scut work" to do Try not to have too many unfinished projects and start one as  soon as you plan it so it doesnt get old before youo start it and have already changed seasns/sizes/tastes before you even finish it!! Keep projects do-abe, not too grand so as to overwhelm and jut challenging enough Good luck!
