Question:

Organizing toys -garage AND playroom.?

What are some good ways to organize a playroom? In the playroom we have dolls, kitchen things, game systems (xBox and Wii) plus games, books (we keep them downstairs), legos, matchbox cars, barbies, dress-up, educational toys, board games, etc. I'm sick of walking downstairs and tripping over everything.

Same question with our garage. We have a 3 car garage, and we only put the big car (for when we travel or have friends coming), That means we have a ton of room for outdoor toys (bikes, scooters, Bartbie Jepp, jump rope, hula hoops, soccer balls, basketballs, wiffle balls and bats, etc). I'm not sure what to use to oragnize that either. Tips for that would be so helpful as well.

Thanks for helping out!

  1. i love these questions!!! our playroom is actually divided. not by a wall, but by gender. the left has containers, crates, cubbies for barbies, brats, barbie house stuff(totes) dress up . and all the girly pillows and snuggle blankets. the right has wrestling posters, hot wheels, tractors ets. in containers totes, everything. it works great for reading too, to label with construction paper the name of everything (on the outside of totes, crates and containers. all the games, are always together.playstation in one part/gamecube in another etc. and they are all together with the tv in the entertainment stand. i also made a house rule to play with one theme at a time to stop mix up.  if you are playing barbies... stay out of the leggos. first pick up the barbies, then get out the other. all the boardgames are in the playroom also, in a large tote box and they can only be accessed if they ask me first, and if everything else is picked up. period. the same with playdough, fingerpaints, etc. and no matter what, they are to clean the room before they leave it. good luck!!- the garage is the same. you can get hooks large ones to hang the bikes from the ceiling, abot $3 around here. they are wonderful. we actually put them on the wall, so our kids could access them themselves. tha balls, & bats i stopped by a local welding shop and asked for a large barrell. most of them have them and they give them for free if you take the time to ask. if that doesn't work, get a large outside garbage can and have the kids paint it crazy(they painted our barrell). that way no one mistakes it for trash. hoola hoops and jumprop use the hooks like for the bikes. my son has" outside tractors cars he plays with in the mud or sand. we put those in a round container, bought from the dollar store for $5. they are hard plastic. if you leave any of these containers outside in the back yard, drill a couple holes to let the rainwater drain.-by the way you can put the hoola hoops behind the bikes on the hooks.- by the way we arent rich, and if i remember we did this in about 3 days when we moved in and it cost about $50 to complete it all. remember, they can paint the clear containers with acrylic to give it a little color, if you are crafty, my kids did. they loved doing it too!!

  2. get some shelves and stuff

check out container store target or something watch hgtv

  3. Ikea has some GREAT Storage things, and they are pretty cheap too!

  4. My mom always said pick it up or I'm gonna throw it out!  It took one time for her to actually do it & my room was ****'n'span after that.   Do like the others said & buy some organizational bins & totes, but thats only part of it then then kids need to do their part by helping you keep it up.  Have a garage sale to get rid of some of the excess & use that money to buy the bins.

PS the stars up there are covering a brand name cleaner not a racial slur against hispanics, i'm a brown betty myself  He he he.

  5. how i wish i can see your place. i would be grateful to design it and organize it for you..but because i cannot here are some tips that maybe you can use.

containers (put this on one side of the room) - this is for small toys like small cars, legos, dresses for the dolls, kitchen things..etc..of course you have to put it in different containers.

shelves or cabinets (this would be in the center wall)- buy or you can make it yourselves.. you can put the dolls(barbies), board games, and some stuff that're light and can fit on/in.

if there is a table and chairs put it in the middle.

on the other wall put the tv and the games. the table should be facing the tv.

if your room is small and rectangular shaped, put the tv and the games on the center wall and put the shelves on the other side.or put the shelves and containers on one side if its possible..

the same thing in the garage. put shelves in it. put something where your bikes, scooters, hulla hoops etc can be hanged. you can do this. containers, too for sports items. put it on the sides.use only one wall if possible for all f these.if you cant, the shelves and containers would be on one wall, and the bikes and others would be on the other side.so you can still bring your car inside.

    hope this would help.

  6. for all our toys we have plastic bins..of all nessasary sizes, for our barbies we have an "under the bed storage tote, for doll clothes we have a my est. 5"x14"tote with a folding lid,all different sizes, for our games we have built in shelves in our sunroom, the previous owners had got custom made, that is a thought,in the past before we lived here we used an armour for our games,in our garage we have hooks for helmets jumproopes and hulahoops and cubicles for knee pads balls, bats, ect.we have a 3 car garage extra deep too..i love it in the back of the garage we have shelves,to store boxes,i keep all oor swimming and fishing gear on,the hooks are great!!good luck and have fun,it will make organization so much easier for you and your children
