  1. It came from the VFL. At first there was like 4 or 5 teams but then it expanded and currently we have 16 teams, soon to be 18. It also depends on who's in charge, e.g. if andrew demetrio the f*g didn't have a big role then the footy world would be much happier.

    no worries love

  2. Well - people wanted a sport to watch in the Cricket off season.

Football began on the 10th of July 1858 - with a letter published in the sporting newspaper 'Bells life in Victoria'.

Thomas Wentworth Wills (secretary of melbourne cricket club) was angry at the lack of sports activity in the cricket off season so he wrote a letter outlining and proposing to begin a football club - here is a small quote from the letter

"..I say form a football club and form a comitee of 3 or more to draw up a code of law. If a club of this sort was got up it would be of vast benefit to any cricket ground to be trampled upon, and would make the turf firm"

Thomas wills was regarded as one of the founding fathers of footy.

In 1860 - the "Victorian cricketers guide" ran a view on the game of footy, here is a quote

" football in and about melbourne promises soon to be much an insitution of the wet as cricket of the dry season - last season several new clubs sprang into existance.."

The first footy club was Melbourne.

The first match was staged on the 7th of August 1958, between melbourne grammar school and scotch college (played on a ground now not far from the mcg!)

    Hope this helps  : )

  3. For what it's worth, Aussie Rules started with the VFA (Association). Around 1898, a breakaway group called the VFL started up, and both comps played until 1970s when the AFL squeezed the VFA out all together. By 1927, Hawthorn, Footscray, and North Melbourne I think had also crossed to VFL to make up 12 clubs. VFA continued with 12 clubs also, including Yarraville, Williamstown, Camberwell, Sandringham, Port Melbourne, Preston, Northcote, Coburg, Brighton, Brunswick, and memory failure blots out the rest. Moorabbin came in in the 1950s but got swallowed up by St.Kilda late '60s.

With reference to the question, the AFL began in 1990 to reflect the burgeoning of the game into the power hungry administration as an Australia-wide game, but the AFL's rhetoric has never matched reality.

  4. tom wills made it up sent the rules into the age or something and he lived in moyston

  5. Based on your questions, this and others, sounds to me that you need to find a bookstore, buy a copy of AFL Record Guide to the Season 2008 (Jimmy Bartel on the cover) and get busy reading.

All you have asked is in there.

    Read and enjoy.
