  1. that seems to be semitic origin name to me. similar to yosef.  spelling is an obsession with current era.  old era and with immigration from country to country the names changed by phonetical spellings with language variations quite frequently and nobody was concerned with spelling they were probably just happy and tired from migrating.

    i see immigrants from russia and austria with ossif spelling but that doesn't denote origin just more pieces to the puzzle :)  Lots of ossif up in new hampshire and massachusetts.

    depends how far back you want to go for origin and which line is your particular line.


  2. Immigration records have only a handful of records for that surname. Half were Assyrian (Arab Christians) and the other half were Hungarian.
