Original homemade costume?

I'm not shy about wearing costumes that are "out there". Last year I walked around my high school in full Mario gear, and I'm a girl. Everything was completely mine, from the red cap to the overalls, because I HATE buying costumes.

This year I'm thinking of using the red cap and going as a "mushroom"(Super Mario ones) dealer, but I'm afraid I'll get sent to the principal, so are there any suggestions for a costume that's (MOST IMPORTANTLY)recognizable, slightly original and won't cost that much to make?

If you already own a gown, and don't mind buying a crown and perhaps a scepter, you can go as a princess or queen.  

How about a beauty contest winner!  You can make a banner that says "Miss (or Ms.) (name of your school, neighborhood, or town)".  You can get thick ribbons and letters at a sewing good store, and sew, glue, or iron the letters to the ribbon, and sew the ends of the ribbon together and wear them as a banner.

why would u get in trouble for being a mushroom? Try being yoshi, luigi, Toadstool or the princess...
