Original iPhone and Prepaid Service? at&t help!?

Hey Guys.

Ok so my friend has the original iPhone, 1st version you could say. I am new to the USA and my friend wanted to give me a gift (I know it sounds shady but we have been friends for years.)

He has the original Apple iPhone 4GB.

I need a cell phone but I want it to be prepaid. I know that in the USA, the carrier for the iPhone is at&t. I was wondering, if I bought a sim card online (an at&t simcard.) and then activated it with prepaid service and then just put the sim card into the iPhone, would it work? How does the whole thing work? Like I'm really confused.

What about like internet and texting and all that stuff. I really don't want internet but I DO want to use the WiFi on it.

Again, this is for prepaid.

Please help!

The iphone is not legally on "pay as you go" as of yet so you won't be able to do it. However, when it gets up and running I expect that the internet will either be unavailable or very expensive, wifi will obviously still be free.
