  1. The universe, it is thought, began containing only hydrogen, the simplist of all elements.  In stars, nuclear fusion causes the hydrogen to combine into helium. As a star ages, and the hydrogen fuel is consumed, the elements combine to form heavier and heavier elements, up to atomic number 56 (iron).  This is the limit of a star's ability to create heavy metals.

    We have heavier elements because they form in the explosions of novas and super novas.  The explosion of these novas will cause the formation of all heavier elements.
