Orlando Magic appoint Rob Hennigan as the new General Manager – NBA Update
Ever since Orlando Magic parted ways with Otis Smith and Stan Van Gundy last month, the search to fill up two of the most demanding positions in the organization has been going on at a quick pace.
With the NBA Draft just 8 days away, the Magic have solved one piece of the puzzle by appointing Rob Hennigan as the General Manager.
Hennigan had been associated with the Oklahoma City Thunder for the last four years in the capacity of  an assistant general manager and  Magic`s chief executive officer Alex Martins was quite pleased after roping him in;
"Rob is an astute strategist and evaluator of talent who comes to the Magic family from two championship-level organizations," Alex Martins said. "We feel he is an outstanding fit and the right choice to lead our basketball operations
team in achieving our championship goals."
Hennigan joined the Thunder as the director of college/international player personal and gradually rose in ranks becoming the team`s assistant general manager and player personal in 2010.
Before coming over to Oklahoma City, he had spent four years with the Western Conference powerhouse San Antonio Spurs. There he joined as an intern and became the director of basketball operations in 2007.
Previously there had been speculation that the Magic management was considering to hire a much older person for the job. Shaquille O'Neal and Phil Jackson were linked to take up the position; however taking a younger direction
might just be the catalyst and the change of approach required for the Magic to steady the ship.
With the appointment, Hennigan has become the youngest general manager in NBA history, but have some serious tasks at hand once he officially takes over.
The first issue that the Magic would want to take care of is to hire a new head coach. That needs to happen quickly as the draft is just around the corner and the franchise would not want an off season without proper supervision
for the players.
Another matter which Hennigan would have to deal with immediately is the status of their all-star centre Dwight Howard who still hasn’t made a decision regarding his future.
Hennigan now has to decide on whether to build a team around Howard or without him.
