Orlando Magic considering Thunder or Spurs executives as their next GM - NBA Update
Orlando Magic are searching for their next GM among the successful franchises like Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs.
Ever since firing Otis Smith, Magic CEO Alex Martins has been looking out for a suitable candidate with the most adequate leading skills.
Orlando’s hierarchy is hoping to interview Thunder vice president and assistant general manager Troy Weaver and Spurs assistant general manager Dennis Lindsey. According to the Yahoo sports Magic has already taken permission to
speak with Weaver.
“Thunder vice president and assistant general manager Troy Weaver and Spurs assistant GM Dennis Lindsey have been targeted, and Orlando have been granted permission to talk with Weaver, sources said. The Spurs’ OK of permission
for Lindsey is imminent”.
According to Mark Sandritter of SB Nation, San Antonio Spurs are also expected to give permission to interview Lindsey.
“Spurs assistant general manager Dennis Lindsey is also a candidate, and San Antonio is expected to give Orlando permission to interview Lindsey soon. Lindsey, who has been with San Antonio for five years, has previously been a
candidate for open general manager positions in Toronto and Portland.”
Previously it was learnt that Magic owners the DeVos family and CEO Alex have shortlisted the names of Indiana Pacers and New York Knicks executive Donnie Walsh and former New Orleans Hornets General Manager Jeff Bower.
The Magic post will come with a lot of complications. The prime responsibility will be to find a coach for the team and will be a complicated matter, considering that Dwight Howard will like to have his say in the matter.
There is also a possibility that Howard will leave the franchise and that can put the club in a painful rebuilding phase. The task at hand would then be to lure star players into the South Florida franchise and try to build a team
around them.
The franchise has good role players in the form of Ryan Anderson, Jason Richardson and Glen ‘Big Baby’ Davis, but the effect Howard has on the team was evident in the first round of the playoffs. Up against the Indiana Pacers,
the Magic put up a good fight, but didn’t have that star presence that could have given the extra edge.
Whoever will take the GM job at the franchise will have to ensure that Magic get all the re-enforcements required to become championship contenders once again.
