Orlando Magic head Coach Stan Van Gundy attends a High School Camp: NBA Update
The Orlando Magic’s head Coach Stan Van Gundy attended the Orlando Magic Recreational Centre on Wednesday and gave some quality time to High School kids. He seemed extremely busy at the Orange County Centre, where almost 50 kids keenly learned the basketball skills from Magic head coach. The event was sponsored by the United Healthcare and Van Gundy was invited as a special guest.
Van Gundy participated in the event with full enthusiasm and made the children go through different training drills. Van Gundy also expressed his contentment to visit the kids who were so much in love with the game of basketball and paid special attention to his lectures on the sport.
During certain training drills, Van Gundy emphasized on fundamentals of basketball and made sure those kids understand the basics of this sport. Several media people were also there and asked him couple of questions about the event.
“You do it sort of the way that you do it, but the challenge is when you have a large group like this is to keep everybody involved. That’s why stuff like ball-handling and passing drills are good because you can get more people going. I know with myself (as a former college player), that’s what used to bore me to death. It’s fun being in camps with kids. It’s amazing how things are so similar, you have to teach a little bit more at a lower level, but the fundamentals never change. The fundamentals don’t get overlooked by the better (NBA) players.”
Stan Van Gundy is regarded among the best coaches in the National Basketball Association. He has spent almost 16 years in the league. Before starting his coaching career in the league he had a tremendous coaching career with five different Universities. His successful college coaching career helped him to enter into the biggest basketball league in the world where he joined the Miami Heat in 1995 as an assistant coach.
After spending twelve years with the Heat, he was reportedly relieved off his duties by Pat Riley, the president of the basketball operations at the South Beach franchise. Although, Van Gundy insists to the day that he left the Heat on his own terms, the now Orlando Magic coach has been the most vocal critic of the Heat and their big three trio of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.
In fact, Van Gundy has been constantly the centre of attention because of his outspoken nature and this lockout activity with the kids is certainly a nice change.
