Orlando Magic shouldn’t be hasty with the Dwight Howard trade – NBA Feature
Amongst the list of the players who may bow out from their contract or get traded in the next season the name of Orlando Magic’s star centre Dwight Howard is right at the top.
Howard has achieved a lot of success in a very short time and he is unarguably the best centre out there at the moment. This will make him one of the hottest commodities on view, when the Magic start accepting the offers for his
trade.
However, they must not rush with it fearing the example of LeBron James and Cleveland Cavaliers saga.
After the infamous ‘Decision’ franchise managers try to get as much as they could by trading a star player, before he exercises the option himself. Although, Howard has re-iterated time and time again that he will give the Magic
another year in a bid to try and win the NBA championship, there is a fear that if the big man gets an offer too hard to reject from a genuine championship contender, he may change his mind and the Magic would be left with nothing on their roster.
This is a reason to worry, no doubt, but this haste is not good for the Magic for one particular reason.
We all know that the Magic need to assemble a star cast around Howard, capable enough to help Magic win the NBA Championship next season. This is the only way the South Florida franchise will be able to keep the big man. With the
new Collective Bargaining Agreement just needing a customary ratification from the owners and the player, the Magic might find a way to do that successfully.
That window comes in the form of Amnesty Clause.
With this clause, the Magic can waive off the huge contract of shooting guard Gilbert Arenas and create enough space in the salary cap to shop few star players from the free agency and the trading block. If they can get the likes
of Chris Paul, Jamal Crawford or David West in their lineup, Howard will get a reliable back up option and the Magic might just go on to win the championship after coming so close for the major portion of the last decade.
If at all, the Magic still don’t manage to succeed, then they can always let the trade play out and get as much benefit as they can in Howard’s return.
