Orlando Magic waive reserve shooting guard Von Wafer – NBA Update
A week after firing head coach Stan Van Gundy and general manager Otis Smith, Orlando Magic have waived reserve guard Von Wafer. The guard had 2 years remaining on his contract but they were both fully unguaranteed and the move
was expected.
Orlando acquired Wafer in trade deal involving Boston Celtics in 2011 which sent power forward Brandon Bass to the C’s and landed Wafer and Glen Davis on the Magic bench.
The 26-year-old player participated in 33 regular season games and averaged 5.9 points and 1.4 boards. His best performance came in the game against Atlanta Hawks on April 13th
when he collected 16 points and 8 boards.
From shooting point of view this was his best season, as he shot a career-best 45.2 percent from the field and 35.9 percent from the free throw line.
He also participated in one post season game against the Indiana Pacers, netting 6 points and 1 board. The decision was expected because Magic already have 2 shooting guards in Jason Richardson and J.J Redick and Vafer’s departure
also gives the Magic a bit of flexibility in the salary cap.
Orlando will be having a busy summer as they will have to deal with the Ryan Anderson, who is becoming a free agent. They also have to deal with Jameer Nelson, who has a player option next season and has to inform the club with
his intentions by mid June.
Then there will be the biggest question of all, the one about Dwight Howard. The franchise would ideally want the Superman in signing a long-term contract, but the indications are that they will trade him. If the big man leaves,
then the franchise will have to make some big trades to remain a genuine post season contender in the Eastern Conference.
However, to make all those important decisions, the Magic will need a general manager soon and CEO Alex Martins has been a busy man in the last few weeks. The Magic have so far shortlisted the names of Oklahoma City Thunder’s vice
president and assistant general manager Troy Weaver and  San Antonio Spurs assistant general manager Dennis Lindsey.
