Charity Hospital has reopened as University Hospital.  The VA is still open as well.

Rent is still pretty expensive since Katrina.  The upside though is that although you pay more, you can get places that are basically brand new since the renovations/rebuilding.  The housing market is bust right now though (like everywhere else), so you could probably buy for pretty cheap if that is an option.

Good luck with your decision.  New Orleans is an awesome place to live, always something to do here.  I left for a few weeks after the hurricane and couldn't wait to come back.  No other city can compete with the culture and food we have here!
