Ornithologist question?

When you become an ornithologist do you work on all birds or a group like penguin, hawk etc

  1. I work mostly with passerines, and specifically work with a couple endangered species (that are passerines)  I occasionally get to band baby hawks in the nest and have recently worked with  endangered Terns (they nest on the beach).  I basically know how to identify ANY type of bird I see, and know the call or song for most birds as well,  but don't study all of them for my job.  


  2. I'm not an expert, but depending on what you intend on doing for a job, you can learn more about specific species of birds or types. like, you can be an ornithologist, know the basics of most birds but know a lot about raptors (carnivorous birds) or more specifically Hawks, or even more specifically coopers hawks...note, you should probably look up if this info is completely accurate because I am not completely sure...
