Ortensia to crush competition in the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes
The Group 1 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes (British Champions Series) has pulled together a competitive field which for once is dominated by an Australian racing star, Ortensia. She has proved herself in Australia, Dubai and has recently set strong footings in
Britain too. The five furlong race will be contested by nineteen other two-year and above contenders on Friday, 24th August at York. The prize money set for the race is £141,775.
Three out of the four outings of Testa Rossa’s bay mare were in Group 1 events while the most recent was among grade 2 company. She started her new season in the UAE and won the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint Sponsored By Emirates NBD on 31st March, 2012
at the Meydan race course over five furlongs.
Ortensia won the race by the margin of 1 ¼ lengths and set the Edward Lynam trained favourite entry of the race, Sole Power, second.
The Paul Messara trained failed to maintain the composure for the next two races as she ended ninth at the Royal Ascot and then fourth at Newmarket. She was ridden by two different jockeys during both the races.
The second success of the season for the seven-year-old Australian bay mare came in the form of the Group 2 Gordon’s King George Stakes on 3rd August, 2012 at Goodwood over five furlongs.
She landed the race defeating Spirit Quartz by 1 ¼ lengths while riding with jockey, William Buick.
The 5 to 1 entry for the race has never been in a better form and is backed by the recent Group 2 success. She will once again become the mount for the amazing rider, William Buick.
The mare will need to look out for Tiddliwinks who landed a group 2 and then a group 3 race during the current season. The very recent outing was not very impressive but the drop down in the furlongs today might just be the key for rolling back into form.
Another serious threat that Ortensia will need to take down is the 9 to 2 entry, Bated Breath, who won a graded event through the seasonal debut and then secured a second place in the very recent grade 1 race.
