Question:

Orthodontic appliances to correct an overbite?

I recently went to the orthodontist, and was told that I had 2 different options to correct my overbite (while using braces at the same time). The first was to have jaw surgery, which I am hesitant about since it is surgery... and the second was to have an appliance such as a mara or herbst that will move my lower jaw forward. Has anyone had either of these procedures done? I am not sure which one would be better, because I am not sure how efficiently the appliance would take care of the problem. Any information would be wonderful! Thanks!

  1. If you are an adult then surgery would be the most stable option for you. And if at all you go for these fixed functional appliances like MARA or Herbst go for the latest ones like Forsus Bite Corrector......Again I will have to see your facial photographs to tell you properly

  2. I had an overbite when I had braces in middle school, and they gave me headgear to wear. Basically, this just pulled my upper jaw back overnight while I slept (thank God I never had to wear it to school) and was quite effective. My mother had an underbite and had to wear neckgear to school. As far as I know though, it corrected it just as effectively as my headgear corrected mine.

If you're wary of surgery, try the Mara/Herbst procedure. Just from Googling it, it doesn't seem to really hurt and provides pretty good results. Worst case, if that doesn't work, you can do surgery. It's tough to do it the other way around.

    Best of luck!
