My brother is having braces fitted in a couple of weeks to try to close a gap in his upper front teeth. His dentist says he will need to cut some tissue between his teeth to facilitate this. He's (my brother) worried that this might leave a noticeable scar when he smiles....anybody out there any experience of this procedure, how did it go for you? no links please...thanks

@ also any input from any dental professionals would be helpful.

  1. There is no scarring,  and even he won't be able to see where it was done.

  2. I'm not a professional, but when I was younger my front teeth were slow to come in so my dentist had to cut my gums. No scar. If he's not confident about his smile now he'll be grateful when the braces come off and the gap is gone. He'll probably need to wear a retainer afterward to maintain the work that was done and to keep his teeth from shifting. However, teeth do shift throughout a lifetime. I'd say go with a clear, barely noticeable retainer.

  3. my mom's an orthodontist and i don't think there will be a scar, because the dentist is cutting off a little bit.  If there was a scar, the teeth would cover it or it would be so small you couldn't even notice it.

  4. There will be no scarring, gums heal very easily as long as there is no prior gum disease he will have no issues with the revitalization of the gums.
