Question:

Orthodontist appointment tomorrow

Tomorrow morning I have a consultation at the orthodontist. I don't know what to expect, despite reading about it on the internet for over an hour now! I seem to think that for some reason, for me it will be different, and all go wrong, but I put that down to me having stupid irrational fears of everything, and being somewhat of a hypochondriac.

I HATE the normal dentist. I don't know why, I used to like going to the dentist when I was younger, and I've had no bad experiences, I just grew scared over time.

Will the orthodontist be different?

What will they do on the first vist?

How long should I expect to spend there?

How long will I have to wait for treatment?

Any other top tips to stop me turning into a nervous wreck the second I arrive there?

  1. What are you going there for? A consultation for what?

  2. The consultation is a piece of cake. The orthodontist will look at your teeth, maybe ask you to bite down on impression-paper or whatever it's called, then devise a plan for getting your smile perfected. Other than an explanation of what the plan is, how long it'll take, and making payment arrangements, that's as invasive as it gets.

For our kids, the brackets were glued on about a week later, and a wire strung through the brackets and tightened a little. Their teeth were a little sore for a day or two (spaghetti, but no salad, for example), then it was as if nothing had happened. A few weeks later they went back, got it tightened a little more, and someone checked to be sure they were cleaning their teeth well, not in too much discomfort, and was ready to answer their questions.

Today they both have really nice smiles, BTW.

  3. If tomorrow is the first consultation, all they will do is have you or your parents (depending on your age) fill out the required paperwork with insurance info, etc. They will then have you sit in the chair so the ortho can examine your teeth and determine exactly what has to be done to fix your problems. My ortho took pics with a regular camera of all my teeth while I was smiling. He/She will also give you costs information. They will then schedule your second appointment, at this appt you will have x-rays done (easy) nothing like normal dentist type x-rays, they will also do impressions, impressions was the worst part for me, but not anything horrible. The time frame for getting your braces on just depends on if you need teeth extracted, of course this will delay the process being you have healing times.

just relax, it will all be fine!
