Ortiz says he wants a rematch with Mayweather for his integrity and not for money – Boxing news
Former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz has said that he wants a rematch with Floyd Mayweather for his own integrity and not money.
Ortiz, who now holds a record of winning 29 of his 34 professional fights (2 draws), with 22 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, has been constantly pushing Mayweather for a rematch.
However, he has not received any positive response as of yet. Mayweather not too long ago claimed Ortiz wants a rematch just to make money and that is it. Therefore, the Garden City pugilist, Ortiz, has responded to his compatriot.
Ortiz told RingTV, “I’m going to put this behind me. The reason I want the rematch is not for the money, but for the integrity, the dignity and the honor of our sport and for the fans. If Floyd Mayweather wants to give me the rematch, then I will be waiting
for him with open arms. If he doesn’t want to give us a rematch, then we will move on, and we’ll see him in the hall of fame in 15 years. If he does want to want to give us the rematch, to show that it’s not for money, we will fight do it for free.”
The 24-year-old Vicious Ortiz lost to the undefeated American legend, Mayweather, via controversial knockout in a much-anticipated bout on September 17, 2011 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
During the fight, Ortiz head-butted Mayweather in the earlier stages of the fourth round for which he was docked a point. However, when the fight was reset Ortiz went on to hug Mayweather as an apology. Mayweather allowed him to hug but in the meanwhile,
he unleashed a devastating left hook followed by a right which knocked out Ortiz.
Thus Ortiz, who was not ready when he was knocked out, desperately wants a rematch with Mayweather. Therefore, he is asking Mayweather for a rematch. Let’s see if that happens.
