Osayemi Oludamola fails doping test
Another controversy rocked the women's 100m dash event in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.
Osayemi Oludamola, who was handed the gold medal in the event after Australian Sally Pearson was disqualified for false start, has tested positive for a banned substance.
Commonwealth Games Federation president Mike Fennell confirmed the report at a press conference on Monday.
"Unfortunately I have to report to you that we have had a positive result. It is in relation to the winner of the 100m women's runner," he said.
Fennell explained that Oludamola tested positive for the banned stimulant Methylhexaneamine. Anti-doping officials have made more than 950 tests so far in this Games and this is the first time that an athlete tested positive for a banned substance.
An unnamed anti-doping official, however, said it is still uncertain if the Nigerian will be stripped of her medal.
"There are a few bridges to cross yet, including the testing of her B (second) sample. Let's not get ahead of ourselves yet," the official said.
Meanwhile, Nigeria chef-de-mission Elias Gora declined to comment on the issue, saying that she has yet to see the test results.
"Let it be said first. I am not going to pre-empt anything that has not come to me first," he said.
Oludamola also ran in the 200m event yesterday but failed to make it to the finals.
Oludamola finished second to Pearson in Friday's 100m race but the English team lodged an appeal after, saying that the Australian made a false start. It took the officials four hours to announce its final decision on Pearson, who already ran a victory lap
and gave an interview about her win.
The Australian team filed a counter-appeal but it was turned down. The result left Pearson in tears, saying that she was devastated by the final verdict.
